After some more advanced blacksmithing projects? Check out my channel.
Historical recreations and tool making are my thing and I upload a new video every Saturday on how to have a go yourself at making some slightly more tricky items such as lighting implements, axes and pattern welding to name but a few.
I trained at the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford, followed by an apprenticeship in restoration and conservation of heritage ironwork. I now work from a 200 year old smithy in Rural England.

Forging Viking Tongs
This video shows the process of forging pre-medieval tongs. This style of tongs runs from the iron age to the medieval period and as such is suitable for Viking, Roman, Anglo-Saxon setups.
If you would like to forge your own tongs to this spec, please consider purchasing my step-by-step drawings, featuring measurements in both metric and Imperial : rowan-taylor-glamorous.sellfy.store/p/viking-tongs-step-by-step-drawings-with-measurements/

Forging a Roman Iron Fibula
Переглядів 14 тис.Рік тому
In this video, I forge a reproduction Roman Iron Fibula. This is based on several finds and is one of the smallest intricate objects I have forged. If you are interested in creating your own, you can follow the video or I have created step-by-step drawings for you to follow which you can purchase here: rowan-taylor-glamorous.sellfy.store/p/forging-a-roman-iron-fibula-rowan-taylor/
Recreating the iron stand from Sutton Hoo. Part 2: The bull head capital.
Переглядів 11 тис.6 років тому
In this video, the second in the Iron Stand series, I reproduce the topmost element - a radiused cross surmounted by four bull heads.
Reproducing the Iron Stand from Sutton Hoo. Part 1: The shaft.
Переглядів 7 тис.6 років тому
In this episode, I commence the reproduction of the Iron Stand from Sutton Hoo. Here, I create the shaft for the stand, which tapers from 20 X 16 down to 10mm square at the top - the longest continuous taper I have ever forged. I then create two twists on the top section and forge-weld a pair of scrolls above the base.
reproducing the Sutton Hoo Axehammer. Part 4: Completion.
Переглядів 8 тис.6 років тому
In this video, I complete the Sutton Hoo axehammer reproduction. I forge and shape a suspension ring and hot-rasp the bevels before heat treating the axehead.
Forging the Sutton Hoo axehammer. Part 3: Profiling, assembly and new ring.
Переглядів 10 тис.6 років тому
In this video, the third in the Sutton Hoo Axehammer series, I profile and complete the forgework on the head of the axehammer and fit it to the iron handle. I also replace the swivel-ring from episode one with a better and more accurate example.
Forging the Sutton Hoo Axehammer. Part 2: The head.
Переглядів 9 тис.6 років тому
In this video, the second episode in the axehammer series, I create the hammeraxe head from wrought iron, with a forge-welded hammer face and steel bit as well as a punched and drifted eye.
Forging the Sutton-Hoo axe-hammer. Part I, the iron handle.
Переглядів 13 тис.6 років тому
In this video, brought forwards by a couple of weeks due to the loss of my bayonet footage, I begin the process of reproducing the Sutton Hoo axehammer. The axe hammer was excavated from the ship burial at Sutton Hoo, the same grave as the cooking chain was found in. What was the purpose of the axe? it is a matter of debate and theories range from it being a weapon to a caulking iron. My person...
Casting experiment #1
Переглядів 6 тис.6 років тому
Due to equipment problems, I've not been able to continue the Bayonet series over the past couple of weekends so in the meantime here is a video on learning how to cast metals. The next bayonet video will be out this coming Saturday and normal service should be restored after that! As I am a conservation blacksmith, I occasionally have to work on cast iron. My ultimate goal is to be able to cas...
Forging a Brown Bess Bayonet. Part 3: Preparing the socket and scarfing the blade.
Переглядів 7 тис.7 років тому
In this video, I refine some wrought iron in order to create a finer material to create the socket. I also prepare the blade for welding.
Forging a 1st model Brown-Bess Bayonet. Part 2: forging the blade.
Переглядів 8 тис.7 років тому
In this video, the second episode in the Forging a Brown Bess bayonet series, I forge the blade. The blade is forged from a 100 year old bar of homogeneous carbon steel of unknown chemistry but high carbon content. The blade is forged deliberately thick in order that it be ground to its final proportions. In this video you will see forging to a trangular section, forging large square tapers, do...
Forging a Brown Bess Bayonet: Part 1: Tooling-up.
Переглядів 11 тис.7 років тому
In this video, the first of a new series, I begin setting up for the production of a first model Brown Bess Bayonet. To do this, I create a double-fullering tool and a mandrel in order to weld-up the fixing socket. This particular type of Bayonet would have seen action during the revolutionary war and to a lesser extent the war of 1812. Enjoy these videos? Want to help? You can donate money on ...
Forging a mini turning hammer for Pete Smith
Переглядів 9 тис.7 років тому
In this video, I forge a miniature hammer for a former tutor, Pete Smith. Pete is an amazing chap whose nickname is "the wizard" and for very good reason. Pete, alongside Chris, Adrian and Dave, is one of the people without whom I would not be where I am today. Have a look at his website: www.wherethelightgetsin.co.uk I apologise for the delay with the next series, I have had some techical diff...

Very nice...well made
hey nice to see you back love the control you show in your hammer work plz more vids!!
absolutely stunning work, i wich to recreate it too
As a guitarist I get comments about my long fingernails on my right hand. As a human being I'm amazed how people think its any of their business, let alone advise you to cut them.
Just to reiterate what so many are saying, I’ve been watching your videos for years, so glad you’re back. One of my blacksmithing teachers in Sveg, Sweden, described you as the master of welding. Your work is endlessly inspiring, you’re one of the best Rowan!
Would mild steel work for this?
Even youtube's autotranslation is out of sync.
Very enjoyable video, soothing voice and good technique.
I have been asked to make a key for one of these strongboxes, do you have any advice you can give me
The tube on this one was brazed sheet, with the wards brazed onto that. Message me on Facebook - Rowan Taylor - and I will try and send you some pictures of the spare key I made for this one.
Thanks for sharing Rowan. They look like quite a heavy set of tongs? I've always been intrigued by the design as they don't look like they'd grip particularly well. Though using them in pairs makes far more sense. I look forward to the next video. All the best Andy
Thank 4:56 😊you for sharing your Craft❤🎉
Still so glad to see you back after all this time, I have very much enjoyed your videos for all these years.
Magic!
What flux do you use? Thanks.
Glad to see you back.
do you sell them? if yes how much? really good video, keep the good work my friend!
You do very good work. Nice detail
You really explain things well.
i am brand new to blacksmithing, thank you kind stranger on the internet
So glad you're back!
Didn't expect a new video from you, welcome back.
Nice job neat and functional, good camera work and dialogue. Tony Artistic Blacksmith South Australia
Beautiful forgework. Who says you can’t forge delicate items:)
Good to see you back making videos man!
Welcome back! Love your videos.
Woo! I'm glad to see more of your videos!
Thanks for posting this, great to see you posting again. I've made these before, looking forward to trying your dimensions and drawings, great idea. Thanks again.
I like the look of those, they may be my the first set I make
So happy to see you're making videos again!
Hey Rowan, you’re back! Great! You’re a credit to our ancient craft.
"sixteen face-a-gon" = hexidecigon Of course, the Romans never really conquered Britain entirely, did they? 😎
What kind of coal do you use?
Welcome back Rowan!
great work and excellent video. Question for you from a beginner: To my eye the material around the hinge is a little light. Is this a problem? Could you have made a smaller hole and then drifted it larger to save more material?
So glad to see you doing videos again.
WB !
It's good to see you on here again Rowan. Different smithy, I noticed. Change of venue?
i could watch you men of iron all day' very relaxing
HE LIVES Hi rowan. Big fan. Glad to see you're doing videos again.
I can't believe I missed your first upload in 6 years! And I've been patiently waiting/hoping for your return. So awesome to see you back!
Lovely pair of tongs. I may have to give it a go
Still using the Viking Hammer I bought from you a few years back. Great work!
They look lovely !!
Thank you for watching!,,,,,, Thank you for making! all the best from Tang
Thanks Tim! Good to see you on here, I didn't see much of you at Caherconnel!
Thank you for the video,
9:22 particularly fond of this very relatable moment (not just me then). 😂 Also, wickedly accurate and very sardonic Tim Key impression 😅 Awesome video, beautifully shot too. Thanks!
Definitely not just you. You can usually see the exact moment I go to my happy place and lose spatial awareness 😂
Not just you! You can usually tell the exact moment when I go to my happy place and lose all spatial awareness 😂
Holy shit, Rowan's back?
I have been for 6 months, it's just I've only managed two videos in that time 😂😭
Long time no see Sr. Good to watch your videos again ❤
Thank you!
Great to see you back
Thank you!
